McDaniel College maintains one room for property storage over the summer months.  Space is given out based on who signs up first, but we also prioritize based on distance, giving emphasis to students living more than 12 hours driving distance from campus.  The sign up sheet will be available to students when they return from Spring Break.

This year we are bringing back the Poverty Simulation activity and would like to welcome you to participate. Please take the time to register by following the link HERE

The poverty simulation experience is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive from month to month. It is a simulation, not a game. The object is to sensitize participants to the realities faced by low-income people. In the simulation, participants assume the roles of up to 26 different families facing poverty. Some families are newly unemployed, some are recently deserted by the “breadwinner,” some are homeless, and others are recipients of TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, formerly AFDC), either with or without additional earned income. Still others are senior citizens receiving Disability or Retirement or grandparents raising their grandchildren. The task of the “families” is to provide for basic necessities and shelter during the course of four 15-minute “weeks.”

 The simulation will take place in the Forum with the “families” seated in groups in the center. Around the perimeter are tables representing community resources and services for the families. These services include a bank, super center, Community Action Agency, employer, utility company, pawn broker, grocery, social service agency, faith-based agency, payday and title loan facility, mortgage company, school, and child care center.

 The experience lasts from two and a half to three hours. It includes an introduction and briefing, the actual simulation exercise, and a debriefing period in which participants and volunteer staffers share their feelings and experiences and talk about what they have learned about the lives of people in poverty.

Information about the 2013-2014 Housing Lottery/Room Selection Process has been posted online along with helpful documents and forms you may need to navigate the process.  Please be sure to look over the information, but for right now just focus on March 15, 2013.  This is when the Housing deposit is due, and in order to participate in the lottery process you need to get that deposit in on time.

Forms will be available for students looking to swap rooms on September 10 and 11, turn them in on the 12th, we will review them and get back to you on the 13th, and then you do the move over the weekend!

Please check your McDaniel email accounts to get your email with your room assignment and roommate information for next year.  If you are a returning student this is probably a refresher for you, but if you are a new first year student, it is likely a bigger deal :)

The email also has information about move-in for August, so please read it through.

The placement process for the incoming first year students is underway and we have disabled the link to the roommate survey...we had left it live for a few extra days beyond July 1st because of some areas not having power after the storms, but the placement process is underway now.  If you did not turn in your roommate survey, but you deposited and indicated that you want to live on campus, you will still be assigned a bed.

Don't forget to fill out your roommate questionnaire for new incoming first year students if you have not done so already.  The deadline is July 1st.
